Nenagh Town

Nenagh is a perfect base from which to explore the many attractions of the West of Ireland’s “Shannon Region” . Easily reached via the N7 linking Limerick and Dublin, and less than an hour from Shannon Airport , the town has a long tradition of good hospitality and offers an excellent range of accommodation and restaurants.

Nenagh lies on the plain between the Arra and the Silvermines mountains and is also just a few miles from Lough Derg, one of the biggest lakes in Ireland and a popular centre for leisure Boating and fishing.

History

Initially settled by Vikings, the town was established by conquering Anglo-Norman warlords in the 13th century. Its Irish name Aonach Urmhumhan derives from Aonach, meaning a market or fair. The splendid Nenagh Castle, first built by Theobald Fitzwalter, founder of the Butler dynasty in Ireland, is the town’s main historical attraction, along with the Franciscan friary and the Augustinian priory in nearby Tyone. Also of interest are the 19th Courthouse and gaol, which now houses the Nenagh Heritage Resource Centre.

County Tipperary offers tranquil, unspoilt countryside and fresh clean waters, perfect for walking and fishing holidays. The Silvermines and the Devil's Bit mountain provide spectacular drives and walks while the River Suir is noted for its brown trout. Along the shores of Lough Derg are picturesque villages such as Terryglass, Dromineer and Garrykennedy.

Many of Ireland's best known attractions are also within easy motoring distance - The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, Buratty Folk Park, Clonmacnoise, Birr Castle & Gardens and The Rock of Cashel, along with Atlantic seascapes, uncrowded beaches, and stunning cliff-top and mountain walks.
