Affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1929, Nenagh Golf Club has made massive strides from a very modest beginning. Commencing with 9 holes designed by Alister McKenzie, who has also designed the famous Cypress Point championship course, the layout was considered of the best 9 hole courses in Munster and remained substantially unchanged until 1973, when Eddie Hackett designed Nenagh's first 18 hole course.
The purchase of additional land in the 1980's and 90's provided the opportunity to undertake a major re-development. Work commenced in 1999 and was completed in 2001 and the product is a course set to become one of Irelands most popular inland courses.
Highly praised by members and visitors alike, course architect Patrick Merrigan has designed a very fair test for every golfer, irrespective of ability or prowess. Thirteen new sand based undulating greens are protected by intimidating bunkers and are proving a challenge for even the most fastidious of putters. The course has always been unique by reason of the nature of its soil and the excellent natural drainage and the firm surfaces allowing play all year around.
