Three hundred players competed over the two days of the Presidents Prize and the huge success is testament to a very popular President whose Trojan voluntary work behind the scenes goes relatively unnoticed. Pat's efforts in the general maintenance of the facility have been supreme and his commitment to closing out all matters arising on the committee is truly admirable. Pat is a true gentleman who is always unselfishly available to lend a hand whether it be to assist a member or fix something in the facility. Nenagh Golf Club is honoured to have such a role model as President in 2004.
Back to the competiton, sixteen people qualified for the play-offs with scores of 69 or better. Players on Saturday morning early were unlucky with several hours of incessant rain. Leader in the clubhouse overnight was Joe Hynes with a remarkable 64 followed by Michael Varley on 65 and Sean O Donnell on 68.
With the big guns enjoying better weather on the Sunday it wasn't long before the field was whittled down to sixteen for the play-off.
Most of the large crowd waited for the final trio of Joe Hynes, Tony Tierney & Michael Varley as the belief was that the winner would be in this bunch. Tony Tierney finished with a very strong rally on the last four holes and would surely have won but for bad luck on the eight where he dropped several shots. Joe Hynes was still going very well and seemed to have done enough on the eighteenth only to find he had just been pipped on the back nine by Paul Moloney. Paul's birdie on the eighteenth was the difference on the day in which only a half shot divided the first three. It was a very exciting play-off and congrats to Paul Moloney and all who qualified. A great nights entertainment was had by all after the Presentation of prizes.
